7 top tips to create a boutique bedroom
/Are you looking for bedroom design ideas? ready for a change but struggling with what to do? I feel you, I got you. It’s so important to create a space that you feel really good waking up in, one that calms your soul. Your very first thoughts in the morning are quite powerful and will direct the outcome of the rest of your day. Do you have a bedroom that supports your morning routine? A space that brings you joy and comfort?
I just recently got rid of an extra table in my bedroom (collecting clutter) and replaced it with a little lounge chair and small side table. I sit there every morning by the window with cup of coffee, It’s my little reflection corner, a space to gather my thoughts and set an intention for the day. This little update has inspired me to create a daily morning meditation practice, it’s a game changer. Sometimes it’s these little adjustments that make a big difference in creating a healthy morning routine.
"Morning is an important time of day, because how you spend your morning can often tell you what kind of day you are going to have." - Lemony Snicket
With that being said, I am going give you my top tips for creating a boutique like bedroom, one that feels super refreshing and cozy. There’s nothing like getting into bed at the end of the day, looking around your room and feeling really good about your space, which is also key to a peaceful nights sleep. In this post I’ll give you 7 easy moves to create the bedroom of your dreams.
1. Fresh Linen
Slipping into fresh clean bed sheets at the end of a long day, best feeling ever right? My recipe is quite simple, 300 thread count organic white cotton bed sheets with an organic natural linen duvet cover. That’s my go to. It works with any color palette. It’s natural, organic, clean and feels so good on the skin.
Designer Tip: Did you know that by going organic with your bedding, you're helping to fight global warming, too? Some of my go to organic bedding stores: Coyuchi, Alterra Pure, Citizenry.
2. Layered Rugs
The bedroom is the perfect space to layer up and size does matter, yep I said it. To create more dimension, one rug should be larger than the other. Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns as long as the colors coordinate and the patterns vary in size. Another easy and inexpensive idea, throw a sheep skin rug over a larger patterned rug. Flatweaves (thin rugs) work well with thicker shags rugs on top.
3. Wallpaper
Commitment Issues? no worries, you can add color, texture, pattern or pretend your in a misty forest with a removeable wallpaper. It’s a fun way to change things up and experiment with something new. And when your tired of it…. end it like a bad romance, rip it off like a dirty band-aid and walk away (but please stay in therapy). Some of my favorites - Wallshoppe, Spoonflower, Chasing Paper, Walls Need Love, Murals Wallpaper
4. Ladder Shelf
Add more storage for decorative accents in an eye pleasing way without adding more holes in your walls. If you have some free wall space, lean it and accessories with a few books, plants, crystals, pottery.
Designer Tip: Did you know that being around houseplants and flowers enhances your problem-solving and creativity according to research from Texas A&M University. Among other things, plants also add a bit of humidity to your atmosphere which is a good idea in the winter months.
5. Lighting
Creating a mood is key in the bedroom (wink wink). Good lighting for reading and romance, not necessarily at the same time of course. It’s important to have at least 3 points of light; think overhead, bedside lights and a floor lamp in the opposite corner. Put your lights on a dimmer for sexy time. Add some cool wall sconces, you can install plug ins on the wall and you don’t have to deal with an electrician.
6. Add Something Organic
This will warm up your space and bring new life into your room. There are many antique stores and independent sellers and makers online right now. This is a great way to recycle and repurpose furniture. This bench at the end of the bed is so unique and adds a charming wabi sabi feel to the room. Some of my favorite sources are 1st Dibs, Chairish, Etsy, Olde Good Things
7. Artwork
Adding art transforms a space, it creates mood and evokes feelings. It can conjure up beautiful memories of places you’ve been or want to go to. It’s a great way to bring your personal story and uniqueness into your space
